3 Reasons Why A Humidifier Is A Must For Healthy Skin Year-Round

Hey, besties - let’s talk about humidifiers and why you want to be using one year-round! Canada’s a beautiful place but it feels like we only get a few weeks out of the year where we can truly live with our windows open - other than that it’s air conditioning, heating and exposure to some pretty rough winter conditions that can leave us with dry, irritated skin. Now, I’m not saying a humidifier is going to fix all of your skin problems, but when you start using one in conjunction with a professionally recommended skin care routine it’s going to give you healthier, more hydrated skin!

Let’s start with a little humidifier storytime!

Here are the 3 reasons I recommend a humidifier to most clients…

Woman with hydrated skin

  1. The skin's outermost layer acts as a protective barrier against external aggressors. When the air lacks moisture the barrier can become compromised and cause the outermost layer to lose it's integrity (allowing aggressors to penetrate more easily) - potentially triggering skin conditions like acne, eczema or psoriasis.

  2. Introducing moisture into the air can help alleviate dryness and soothe irritated skin. This is especially beneficial for individuals with sensitive or reactive skins because the added moisture can help increase skin hydration - reducing redness, inflammation and/or itchiness.

  3. They can help to regulate oil levels in certain individuals - dry air can cause the skin to produce more oil as a defense mechanism which can lead to a slew of other problems. If you’re waking up with a “greasy” face this might be a sign that your skin needs a little extra love.

The Takeaway

  • Healthy skin is hydrated skin! My client (see picture) really focused on barrier repair and hydration while we were doing corrective treatments together. You think harsh topicals are going to give you results? Nah, the skin looks it’s best when it’s healthy, hydrated and not working through consistent inflammation.

  • Hydrated skin does a much better of protecting the skin from external aggressors - if you’re someone who suffers from any sort of inflammatory skin condition, focusing on skin hydration will help keep your symptoms at bay.

  • A humidifier is just a piece of the puzzle - don’t forget a professionally recommended skin care routine, hydrating foods and getting that blood flowin’.
